Getting into Biology Classes [May. 5th, 2010|11:45 am]
San Francisco State Ooniversity

I have question for Biology majors...

I am transferring in as a junior in the fall, and I pretty much have my classes planned out until graduation, but I heard that it can be difficult to get into classes due to reduced class numbers and sizes.

The coming semester, I would like to take
Bio 504 (Fungi)
Bio 337 (Evolution)
Bio 355 (Genetics)
and second year Arabic (unsure what the dept/class number is)

My registration appointment is not until August 2.

Do you think I have a chance of getting into these courses right away, or should I plan on crashing around for a while?

Any feedback is GREATLY APPRECIATED!!!! :)

Since there is nothing you can do about it, I'd say don't waste your time worrying one way or the other.

ETA: I blanked on the first part where you said you were transferring in. I thought you were a continuing student who has already been through the registration process. Sorry about that.

Some biology major might be able to tell you how hard it is to get into any of those classes. Preparing those in order of importance is all you can do between now and Aug. 2. So please don't stress about it, because the stress isn't going to influence whether you get in. If you try to register and your classes are full, you can usually try to add them by coming to classes during the first week. You may want to create a list of second or third choices, just in case. But don't stress! Enjoy your summer break.

If you try to register and can't get enrolled or on the wait list, try e-mailing the professor to ask if you can be on his/her personal wait list. they will usually call out everyone that's enrolled first, then people on the official wait list and add them if there are any seats left in the class, then from the "unofficial" wait list, then people who just showed up. Not every professor does this but its worth a try.

are you sure your registration date isn't until august? that seems really late, you should have an "early priority registration" date where you can choose up to 8 units, and then you can sign up for the rest at your "priority registration" date.

I checked my Registration Time page again, and the only information it has in the "Registration Eligibility" box is

Residence Status: Resident
Fee Payment Deadline: July 08, 2010
Final Priority Registration Date and Time: August 02, 2010 at 09:00

I read on this page (http://www.sfsu.edu/~admisrec/reg/2tier_toc.html#a) that transfer students can sign up for classes during a New Student Orientation, but I haven't been informed of any such thing...

Oh, but I've discovered this Orientation thing. Looks like I'll be carting myself up to LA from San Diego to get my first 8 units...

I feel jipped though!! I have quite a few units under my belt and feel entitled to a higher priority than August the second!!

As a fellow transfer student, I feel pretty screwed on getting classes. My registration's my orientation date in July, though. Good luck!
