What is the parking situation like at SFSU's graduation? I live in SF with my parents, pretty close to campus. I'm sure they will want to drive but parking will be awful. Any tips on finding parking? My parents would never take MUNI.

I don't know. I just can't imagine them doing it.

I'm graduating too!!! I'm HOPING it won't be too bad...I think that Park Merced should be pretty empty, and that combined with the garage/Lot 25 on Winston/parking around the school on Lake Merced...I'm hoping it's not a complete lost cause.

Someone who's graduated before...please chime in because I have the same question!

I graduated in 2008 and I'm graduating again in 2010. Parking is moderately horrendous, but if you tell them to try to get there at least an hour early, they should be able to find something in the garage. They also won't be able to leave for at least half an hour after graduation is over since everyone attempts to leave the garage at the same time so there's horrible gridlock.

For the graduation itself, tell them to bring binoculars and that you will call or text them when you're getting up to walk. They will not be able to see you up on the stage from where they'll be sitting in the bleachers, and since everyone is wearing the same cap and gown, we'll all be hard to distinguish on the large television projector screens. About 2000 students graduated in 2008 and everyone walked in the same hour - that's how quick and impersonal it is. My grandparents, whose faculties are reasonably acute, thought they saw me walk at least half an hour before I actually did, so when I called to tell them I was about to walk, they told me that they had seen me walk already and they (and the rest of my family) had left and gone to Fremont, to the restaurant we were going to be eating at. If your family waits til you call them and then uses binoculars to see the stage, they may actually get to watch you cross it - the television screen projector cameras don't catch the stage, they catch the aisles the graduates are walking along as they approach and then leave the stage area. Otherwise, and I can't stress this enough, they will not know when you walk.

I have been to graduations at other CSUs before and SFSU's by far is the worst and the least personal. They won't get to go up to the stage and take pictures of you themselves. The only times they will be able to take a picture of you is before you line up and after the ceremony, before you return the gown.

I don't see what sort of problem they would have with taking BART to 28th street and then catching the shuttle to the University. It's not like they'd be on some rank bus with the hoi polloi. Public transit would be quicker and less stressful, unless you've got frail people coming.
